RISING SEA LEVELS EASY TO IGNORE

Rising seas could be the new normal. They could continue to intrude into freshwater aquifers, ruining drinking water supplies. They could fill drainage systems, leaving nowhere for the storm water to go, especially during high tides. Sarasota County mentioned the issue in its 2007 comprehensive growth plan, adding rising seas as a variable, it has mapped out areas vulnerable to hurricane surges. Mote’s Marine Policy Institute hopes to spur more connections between a rising sea level and public policy.
