I caught this picture of a lady Rhinoceros at Lincoln Park zoo on Saturday.
She’s normally quite sprightly wandering around munching stuff so I was surprised to catch her in this thoughtful or rather completely zonked out frame of mind. She looks kind-of cut for a beast who would step on your rather than bother with you.
Tired lady Rhino - Lincoln Park Zoo
Is she lonely, bored or just plain tired. Do Rhino’s need chums? I am always torn with Zoo’s i.e. on whether they are a good thing or not. From a conservation perspective and for smaller animals I can see the sense, abd I do enjoy them, but for big hulking animals like a Rhino with a small area and the three lions I often wonder if it is right. I may have mentioned this before, I know the zoo does good work, but having a big cat house where the cats have very little space doesn’t seem right. I remember the saddest cat house I ever say was at Frankfurt Zoo about 15 years ago, I hope they have upgraded it since then.
