I have previously blogged about how the international community has turned a blind eye towards the human rights violations in Honduras (read ‘Honduras revisited – free and fair elections?‘; ‘The recalcitrant IMF funds Honduras’; & ‘Human Rights Abuse in Honduras – A Plea to HRW’)
Given that Amnesty International has released statements and reports documenting these abuses, this investigative piece by Joseph Shansky (who was reporting on the military coup) only serves to reaffirm that the situation in Honduras is far from returning to normal as the mainstream media wants us to believe.
As he noted,
‘… With the international community given the green light by the US that democratic order has returned via elections, it’s open season for violent forces in Honduras working to tear apart the political unity of the Resistance Front against the coup…’
Shansky went on to list those whom were killed, including an LGBT activist, Walter Trochez, whom was kidnapped, tortured and shot.
But who is to be blamed? Shansky cites the coup president Roberto Micheletti and other leaders of the regime. He also claims that President Obama and the US State Department ‘played a major role in allowing conditions to get to this point’. They ‘took no concrete action against the thousands of documented violations since the coup took place June 28′.
